Kalmbach Publishing has released an excellent beginners guide to scale model railroading titled, "Introduction to Model Railroading." Veteran author and proven modeler Jeff Wilson uses text and abundant photos to explain how to choose a scale and theme, plan a layout, construct benchwork and roadbed, and the installation of track and turnouts. Wiring and the pros and cons of DC versus DCC are explained for the novice modeler. Additional chapters cover structures, the fundamentals of scenery, and the selection of appropriate motive power and rolling stock. Although interest in passenger equipment has increased significantly in recent years, only one passenger car is illustrated, as compared to, for example, 17 photos of couplers. Helpful sidebars cover soldering, the NMRA, prototype resources, and the Whyte classification system for steam locomotives. Missing is an index that would prove handy, especially for newcomers to the hobby. All in all this is a welcome guide for beginners. The 96-page, soft-cover, 8.25” x 10.75” book is priced at $19.95.
