Hands up those of you who love making earrings! I'll bet there are many hands. Earrings are the arguably the most satisfying to make. They don't require a lot of materials and are quick to make too. Earrings are also highly visible as they are closest to the face.

Earring lovers will appreciate the latest book I received for review. Project: Earrings: 44 Designs Using Beads, Wire, Chain, and More does more than hint that design possibilities are limitless. The projects from several designers were all gleaned from Bead and Button magazines.

What can you expect from this book? Well, there is a range of techniques but beadwork and wire work predominate. There are some chain designs but only 1 true chain maille design.

A few of the designs were simple and clearly selected for beginners. But there were also advanced designs which will delight accomplished enthusiasts.

The curated designs included one mixed media earrings and all kinds of beads and crystals. One of my favorite designs was Anna Elizabeth Draeger's cup chain conundrum earrings which cleverly combined mesh findings with rhinestone chains. It is clear she was inspired by vintage designs. You can well imagine this pair on a 1930's Hollywood actress!

The book is a bargain with 44 tutorials for $18. Very handy for when you need a spark to rekindle dormant creativity., Pearl Blay

This particular edition focuses on earrings made using beads, wires, chain, gemstones and crystals, using some familiar techniques including wire wrapping. This book offers 44 designs, each of which features full-color photographs and easy to follow step-by-step instructions that even a novice with no experience can follow. Included is a listing of all materials needed to complete a beautiful earring set sure to make anyone proud. The ideas are plentiful and stunning, and provide a great source of inspiration for using new and left-over beads.

The introduction features a discussion of various tools and materials, including pliers, needles, findings, wire and various stitching and stringing materials. For beginners, the most helpful section may be the techniques that discuss various threads and knots, stitching methods and basic wire wrapping methods. I especially found the special section regarding stitching that combines cabochons and beads interesting, as it shows how to create a stylish and vintage look that I love. My absolutely favorites are the “Pearl on a Wire” and the “Love thy Lobes” dangle earrings.

Whether you’re into seed or glass beads, gemstones or metals, stringing, chain mail or wire working, you’ll find something of interest in this beautiful edition. Though in soft cover, the glossy paper quality is excellent, as are the photos and drawings.

Project: Earrings is a book you’ll refer to often, as a guide for developing new techniques or a means of generating creative ideas for making your own distinctive jewelry. A must have for jewelry designers and anyone who loves making jewelry. Project: Earrings is a definite keeper.
